Hi, I am Jeff Downes and I have a deep passion for anything automotive. Ever since I can remember, I have loved cars. I still have my first Hot Wheels from 1968. My collection continued from then to the present as I received cars for birthdays and at the holidays. Whenever earned extra cash for chores or for my allowance, I would add to my growing car collection. I loved building plastic car models, designing and customizing each one. I would place them in a setting and take a picture to make the models appear real. Although I do not build models as I did in my youth, I do collect die cast 1/18th scale models that decorate my office.
I always have had a true passion for muscle cars and as a teen dreamed that would be my first car. But that was not the case. Instead I received my first car from my grandfather. A 1973 green four-door Chevy Impala in mint condition. When I got the car in 1981, it only had 16,000 miles on the odometer. I don’t think anyone ever sat in the backseat. It carried seven people comfortably. It sure was a boat, but it was mine! I have been able to get some great rides since then…
Having a strong creative background with a design degree and thirty plus years in the graphic design industry, I started 454 Auto Art in 2006. It evolved as a hobby in an effort to combine my love of design and photography. My father was an avid photographer. I grew up enjoying his pictures, reliving our family trips and his shots of nature through slides that we shared at family gatherings portrayed in a darkened room on the big white screen. 454 Auto Art became the perfect solution for my ever enthusiasm for cars and photography. I have had the pleasure to meet many other car enthusiasts over the years. It has been very rewarding as I have had my work used in automotive theme restaurants and as set decor for television shows. Published in various car auction magazines. Many of my car poster designs are seen on the Mecum Auction. Recently, I was asked if my car designs could be used in an upcoming Hollywood movie! It has been a thrill!
The automotive photography side of my work is not what it appears to be in most cases. The process begins when I am traveling the back roads or historical area throughout the United States. For example, as I slowly worked my way along Route 66, I would stop numerous times to take photos of unique landscapes and lost in time buildings or barns. When I would return to my computer, I would merge my car photograph with one of my shots and marry the two, developing the size, lighting and color for the perfected new image. A car shot in Florida suddenly is sitting on an old stretch of Route 66 in Oklahoma.
I am always creating new t-shirts, automotive photographs, car calendars for all types of enthusiasts and many other items. 454 Auto Art is an exciting creative outlet that I become more passionate about each day. My site is always updating, so be sure to return often.
Thanks for visiting!
